How to: Escape.

We all know what it feels like to just need to get away from it all. A place to go where it seems as if nothing can disrupt your solitude even if you’re not actually alone.

As I was walking down the streets of East Atlanta, GA, with the sun shining on my skin, inhaler in hand, because of how fast I was going, I began to wander

but was I lost?

tumblr_ngbncl5v3a1u4ypzio1_500Not exactly. I escaped…I was completely aware of the distance away from my desired location that I was, still I kept going. Passing by flowers and bags full of leaves surrounded by, well you guessed it…more leaves. I both visually and mentally soaked it all in. The houses looked vintage and the sidewalks were cracked. As I saw the families that lived there, outside unloading boxes of lights to decorate their houses, I thought for sure I’d feel the rush of loneliness in which was one of the things I as trying to escape in the first place. Instead, I felt connected. Entranced…by how even in this big busy city with cars passing by filled with old men slowing down to ask if I’d like to be spoiled…there was a sense of stillness. I felt an unusually strong sense of appreciation for the world around me. From the architecture to the beautifully dying fall trees. For a rare time in my life…

I felt free.

So, exactly how do you enter into this perception altering state of serenity?

  1. Breathe. Regardless of the moment you’re in. Let life flow…you can’t control it, but you can control yourself. Trust me, had I freaked out when I realized the “Walking” option on my phone’s GPS was falsely guiding me, as every 3 minutes it would re-route me and suddenly left me 5 minutes FURTHER away from my destination…I would have never experienced my experience the way it was meant to be experienced.
  2. Let the moment have it’s shine. After you’ve gotten a hold of yourself, pay attention to the things around you. After all, that is the only possible way you’ll notice them entirely. This will cloud any thoughts that could be pulling you back from opening the doors to the present. Which are ultimately the only doors you have the power to open right now.

…that’s basically it. Two simple steps that are actually harder to take for many of us than it seems. You have to do it in such a way that you’re not only in the moment, but engulfed in it. “Lost” without fear…
